The United States Senate is moving forward with legislation increasing the number of federally funded Residency positions offered in the United States. The bill is being pushed by two democratic senators, Bill Nelson and Chuck Schumer, and calls for an increase of 3,000 Residency positions each year for a period of five years, increasing the number of US-produced practicing doctors by 15,000 per a year by the end of the program.

The National Resident Matching Program® (NRMP®) reported 35,969 U.S. and International medical graduate (IMG) school students and graduates viedfor 31,757 positions, the most ever offered in the Match. The number of available first-year positions rose to 28,849, 989 more than last year. (National Resident Matching Program, 2017).
